Nicaragua dengue epidemic out of control

A DENGUE epidemic described as uncontrollable has hit Nicaragua with close to 6,000 cases and at least eight new infections every hour according to the official spokesperson and first lady , Rosario Murillo.

Murillo said that 28,000 thousand people are hospitalized nationwide, of which 961 are suspected dengue cases and 67 confirmed cases including 35 patients in very serious situation .

In the last 20 hours 173 new confirmed cases of the dangerous viral disease , have been reported.
Murillo said that the epidemic has affected mostly children and youth. Of the 14 deaths since January, nine were younger than than 20.
Dengue is transmitted by the bite of the mosquito Aedes aegypti , which incubate their larvae in tanks of clean water, from small containers such as egg shells or empty cans to car tires , barrels or sinks into disuse.
Nicaragua 's government has redoubled its plans to fumigate and clean housing to contain the virus , which causes high fever, headaches and severe dehydration. and in severe cases, internal bleeding.
