Investor confidence in Guatemala in free fall
Smuggling and corruption at customs offices, crime, legal uncertainty, falling tax revenues and ongoing political conflict have sent investor confidence in Guatemala into free fall.
An editorial in Prensalibre says that "in just 20 months indicators relating to entrepreneurs confidence in investing have gone from 80.77 % to 36.11% .
“With no certainty there is no confidence, which is the main capital of an economy for attracting investments.
"… Contributing to this deterioration is the legal uncertainty and declining tax revenues, whose flagship, the tax update has proved discouraging for public finances, because the project approved is not the one that remains in force, due to the multiple challenges, not even the tax on vehicle circulation has survived in the same form as it had been drafted under pressure from motorists."
