Out of gas time to rest Mariano Rivera
“I HAVE USED UP all my gas. The tank is empty. I have nothing more to give,” said New York Yankees pitching legend Mariano Rivera at his final major league baseball press conference.
Panama born Rivera was confirming to reporters in Houston, Texas, on Saturday September 28, that he would never be returning to the mound where he became the greatest closer in the history of the game.
"I have nothing more to give, this is the end and something that I have completely accepted," said Rivera.
"I gave everything and now it's time to say goodbye. I got a gift from God and I am thankful for that."
Two days after his emotional farewell at Yankee Stadium, Rivera, 43, cleared all the questions about whether he would go to the mound on Sunday in the final Yankees game of the regular season against the Houston Astros.
"I'm done, guys, I'm done," said Rivera. "I am happy and satisfied with myself, so it is the perfect time to say goodbye and begin to rest."
There was no post season opportunity for Rivera to add some final gilt to his star studded crown. He pitched his final game on Thursday night in New York at Yankee Stadium when the team was out of contention for the finals for the second time in 19 seasons.
