Another save, another step to Hall of Fame for Rivera
NY YANKEES closer, Panamanian Mariano Rivera , earned his 40th save of the season on Tuesday, September 3, in a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox .
With this save, Rivera reaches nine seasons with 40 or more saves, something only the U.S. Trevor Hoffman has done, Hoffman is now retired . Rivera takes another step to a place in the Hall of Fame.
Rivera announced in March that after this season he will retire and the Yankees have scheduled a tribute at Yankee Stadium for September 22.
The Chorrerano is the all-time leader in saves with 648 and twice reached 50 saves , in 2001 ( 50 ) and 2004 ( 53 ) .
His save was number 42 against the White Sox . According to statistics the most games saved were the Orioles with 77 , followed by the Rays with 64 and then the Red Sox with 58 .
It is the f the Panamanian’s 15th season with 30 or more saves. In his first year (1995 ) he was not closer , In the following year he earned five saves and in 2002 reached only 28 .
The other season that withut good numbers was in 2012 , after a knee injury took him out of play.
Rivera’s 40th save, one less than the American League leader Jim Johnson ( Orioles ).
Once Riv era has retired five years must pass to be considered as a candidate for the makors Hall of Fame.
The decision is taken by a vote of the Baseball Writers Association.
