La Dolce Vita starts at Flamenco Island
MEMORIES of La Dolce Vita are alive and well in Panama and operating out of the Amador Causeway.
There are just 999 Ape Calessino’s in the world produced , and nine of them are in Panama. They were produced by the Piagio company in Italy in 2007,with retro styling and an auto rickshaw body. The bodywork was close to the Ape of the 1950s and 1960s and was designed to evoke memories of the era of dramatic economic growth in Italy known as La Dolce Vita.
Various styles of th Piaggio Ape I are widely used in Italy and India, as delivery vehicles. They are three wheeled carriers, originally produced after World War II with as Vespa with a two wheeled tail.
Panama is the only place in America where a ride in a Calessino providing a ground level view as you tour the city. Tours start at Flamenco Island. Try one and take a step back in time. A 30 km ride will use maybe a liter of gas.
The regula Ape is produced in India by Piaggio India, and is most commonly found in the form of an auto rickshaw (or tuk-tuk).
Nowadays two model ranges are offered: the "Ape 50" with a 49.8 cc engine] and the larger "Ape TM" which comes with a 218 cc gasoline engine or a 422 cc diesel engine.[6] The "Ape 50" can carry 175 to 205 kg (390 to 450 lb) Fuel consumption for the current Ape 50 model is about 30 km/liter (71 mpg).
