ATTT flip flops on motor cycle regulation

MOTORCYCLISTS may soon be off the hook  in Panama as the transit authority ATTT seems set to bury a new regulation that has inspired derision across the country.

Roberto Moreno, director of transit agency ATTT, said Sunday, July 29 that it is evaluating the possibility of rescinding its requirement that motorcyle operators display their license plate numbers on their jackets and helmets.

As a face saving alternative the authority is saying that reflective vests must be used so people can see the operators.
The use of plate numbers was supposed to be to help catch criminals using motor cycles. The argument was laughed out of court by many observers and the law has been opposed by numerous motorcycle groups across the country.
The requirement was supposed to go into effect on Aug. 8, the second date set.
Moreno said that, discussions are still being held with the motorcycle organizations.
"They are proposing that the numbers not be required for the jackets," Moreno said. "We can reach an agreement on that issue, but reflective vests must be used.”
