OMBUDSPERSON: Hand that rocked the cradle or conspiracy?
CONTROL OF the Ombudsman's office has changed, but the scandals surrounding the institution created to intercede and seek justice for the people, continue to reverberate.
On Thursday July 25, Javier Mitil, the Deputy Ombudsman, yesterday took over the job of Patria Portugal the suspended Ombudswoman now under investigation on charges of embezzlement filed by the Attoney General, Ana Belfon. One of his first moves was to request the resignations of any officials who hasengaged in acts of corruption.
He was referring to contracts signed by Portugal.
Faced with allegations of Mitil, Portugal reacted on TVN and claimed the stories published about the no-bid contracts of $250,000 and $200,000 to companies inked by family, arose from a "conspiracy" between the defender and a La Prensa journalist.
She also said that Mitil was fired July 8 contrary to what was said in his appearance in the Assembly three days later, when he denied having been fired. Says a La Prensa report.
Javier Mitil, which was part of Democratic Change before going to the Ombudsman’s office and he believes the government balance is positive. He said that, in his opinion, she did know of family connections among the companies that she hired, but he indicated that the image of the institution has not improved "at all" with the contracts were signed for that purpose .
Mitil Panama believes, says La Prensa that justice works and that Portugal lacked humility and capacity. He did not rule out the possibility that there is a hand that rocks the cradle behind her decisions.
He said he learned of the scandals in the media, because Portugal did not keep abreast of the decisions or delegate tasks.
