UN helping Panama nesting turtles

A $25,000 donation from the UN will help safeguard around 15 000 turtles that annually nest on the beaches of the coast of Cambutal, in Panama's Los Santos province.

The money will be used for the reconstruction of four cabins, four artificial incubators.

The turtles' annual nesting season runs from early May through October.

The original structures were built in 2002, but were abandoned by the NGO responsible for their safekeeping. They are at Punta Blanca, Horcones, La Cuchilla and Morro de Puerco, said the president of the environmental group Cambutal Tortu-Agro, Alexis Rodríguez.
