Panama soccer back to focus on World Cup
The Panamanian soccer federation (Fepafut ) will resume operations after a stormy dispute which cast a shadow over the ethics of the federation.
It also involved pressure from President Ricardo Marrtinelli on a sponsor engaged in a legal dispute .
The federation had its operations halted last week when a court ordered its bank accounts frozen due to a dispute with its main sponsor, Cervecería Barú Panamá. The brewery withdrew its request, however, when pressured by the government.
The dispute arose after Fepafut ended its association with the brewery in favor of another sponsor. The brewery has sought a repayment as outlined in the contract between the two entities.
Helene Weesie, the brewery general manager, said that it withdrew the measure to help the national team continue to prepare for qualifying for the World Cup.
The two sides are still working to resolve the outstanding issues.
