Popular Party to ally with Panamenistas for 2014 election
THE POPULAR PARTY of Panama plans to seek an alliance with the Panameñista Party headed by the country’s Vice President Juan Carlos Varela to fight the 2014 election.
The PP directorate made the decision behind closed doors with a majority of 43 votes, on Sunday, April 28, after ruling out a partnership with Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) led by presidential candidate Juan Carlos Navarro.
It was decided to exclude any conversation with other group other than the Panameñistas and put a deadline of June 15, to realize the union between the two parties. Milton Henriquez, president of the PP, would be the party’s presidential candidate. Henriquez is the brother of Minister of the Presidency Roberto Henriquez in the Martinelli administration.
Four members voted against, including Hannibal Culiolis, vice president of the party, who from the beginning had preferred to go with the PRD says La Prensa
