Italian prosecutors study alleged bribes in Panama

PROSECUTORS in Naples, Italy have opened an investigation into the possible crime of international corruption in which the names of Impregilo– President, Ricardo Martinelli, and Rogelio Oruna surface.

The prosecutors’ initial investigation led to the arrest of Valter Lavítola for alleged corruption, in the case of the conglomerate Finmeccanica. They are now following up on bribes allegedly paid to Panamanian officials says a La Prensa report, which carries a detailed outline from Italian media alleging bribery in Panama involving hospital contracts linked to the metro subway construction, the delivery of large sums of cash to Panama officials and a bank transfer to a leading personality in the government administration.
Throughout the scenario the name of Cuban-American businessman Rogelio Oruna appears. He was the recipient of hundreds of millions of dollars from the Panama government in the form of no-bid contracts. Last weekend Oruna’s home in the Dominican Republic was raided and over $3 million in cash seized, along with a boat allegedly used for drug smuggling.
