New protests looming over hydro electric project
The indigenous people of the Comarca Ngäbe Buglé are preparing to resume protests over a Chiriqui hydro electric plant
They will meet Sunday. April 7 to coordinate action plans. Chief Silvia Carrera said that so far, no answers have been received from the fovernment about the future of the project, which is opposed by the residents.
If an answer is not received shortly, she said the community plans to launch a series of protests.
Chiriquí Governor Aixa Santamarí¬a urged "restraint" and said that the protests should not impact third parties.
In the past they have caused major traffic obstructions, clashes with riot police and the deaths of some, protesters.
