Two wannabe mayors take opposite sides for presidential primary

Divisions within the ruling Democratic Change (CD) party are surfacing in the run up to the party’s primaries

Roxana Méndez, mayor of Panama who aspires to be re-elected, showed her support for the CD presidential candidate Romulo Roux, on Thursday April 4.

She said on Thursday April 4 that she considered him a "great person"  at a 24 December, 55th anniversary celebration.

The mayor said: "we have received good support from Romulo and I believe he is a great person and has great ability, and commitment and honesty that surprises us more every day and encourages us to support him."

Social Development Minister, Guillermo Ferrufino, who was nudged into campaigning for the mayoralty instead of seeking the CD presidential nomination, has expressed support for the former Minister of Housing and Land Management Jose Domingo Arias, who also wants to be the CD presidential candidate in the 2014 general elections.
