Panama facing human rights charges
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in Washington DC, has initiated cases before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for alleged violation of fundamental rights in Panama and Honduras.
An EFE news agency report says the case against Panama relates, according to IACHR,to the "failure" by the Panamanian government of "its obligation" to provide indigenous and Embera Madungandí guna Bayano "an adequate and effective procedure for access to their ancestral territory. "
In addition, the statement of the autonomous body of the Organization of American States also claims that no response was obtained to "address multiple allegations of interference by third parties in the territories and resources" of these indigenous groups. "From the perspective of the right to equality and non-discrimination, the sequence of violations against indigenous peoples of these two are a manifestation of discrimination," said IACHR.
The case was sent to the Court on February 26, 2013 because the Commission concluded that the State failed to comply with the recommendations contained in its report on the merits of the case, which urged them to finalize "promptly" the formalization process, physical delimitation and demarcation of the territories of two peoples.
