Panama lags in gender equality in politics
Panama is close to the bottom of the class in terms of gender equality in politics. In the latest world ranking of women's participation in parliaments Panama was ranked 120 out of 139.
In Latin America it has the worst record. It shares the 120th spot with with Bhutan in Asia. Both have a 8.5% rate of participation of women in their parliaments.
Currently, only 6 of the 71 deputies in the National Assembly are women.
Cuba (45.2%) and Nicaragua (40.2%) are the only countries on the American continent located in the top 10 nations with the most r presence of females in their legislative bodies.
Costa Rica registered 38.6% stake and Argentina, 37.4%.
Panama is overtaken by India, Sudan and Pakistan, which are characterized by a conservative stance with regard to the participation of women in politics. These nations exceed 10% participation of the women in the legislature.
Rwanda takes the top spot with a 56.3% stake. In last place are the Federated States of Micronesia, where there is no female presence in parliament.
