Rioting prison inmates return to cells
Rioting prisoners at the Changuinola jail have returned to their cells after reaching a deal with staff members, and officials from the Ombudsman’s office.
The prisoners, who are on hunger strike, stopped rioting on Monday March 25, after authorities committed to arranging a meeting with Deputy Director of the National Prison System, Alvaro Alvarrado.
That meeting is slated for Tuesday, and prisoners are expected to ask for the dismissal of the director of the prison, Amilcar Espinosa.
Detainees in the regional prison started the riot due to a lack of answers from authorities about allegations of mistreatment.
The prisoners, who have been on a hunger strike for a week, managed to escape from their cells and climb to the roof of the facility.
There are 327 inmates. Riot police were dispatched to the scene.
