The extradition request for the former head of security in Colombia Maria del Pilar Hurtado, who was granted asylum in Panama, still stands.
This was confirmed Friday, August 24, by the Attorney General of Colombia, Luis Eduardo Montealegre, during a visit to Panama. Montealegre said he "fully respects the decision of the Panamanian government." but outside of Panama the execution of the international arrest warrant is valid through agencies such as Interpol said Montealegre.
He warned that the arrest warrant is effective anywhere in the world.Panama granted territorial asylum to Hurtado on November 19, 2010. She is wanted for carrying out wire taps on journalists, judges and opposition politicians during the term of President Uribe. Several high ranking government official have already received jail sentences arising from the scandal.
