Tough new prison terms for war on drugs

Prison terms for those found guilty of possessing drugs or trafficking in arms and explosives have been increased in Panama and in some cases the new level could be doubled

President, Ricardo Martinelli, signed off on  July 4, Law No. 40 which amends the Criminal Code and increases prison sentences. 

The new standard, which also bears the signature, of Public Security Minister, Jose Raul Mulino, says  that for illegal marketing, buying, selling, acquiring storing  or transferring  in any capacity, shall be punished with imprisonment 10 to 15 years.

The sanction will double when using a minor or a disabled person or someone with altered mental status, when provided in a center for education, sports,  or culture, or where public performances take place inr places adjacent to the places listed.

A  person who serves as an educator, teacher or employee of establishments of public or private education or uses violence and an intimidation weapon or uses his status as a public servant for a drug crime  will also face a double sentence.
