Top judge presents bill to kill 5th Chamber
Alejandro Moncado Luna the presiding judge of, the Supreme Court, presented the National Assembly, on Monday July 2 with a bill to repeal the law that created the Fifth Chamber of Constitutional Guarantees.
"Properly endorsed by the plenary of the Supreme Court in the interests of social peace and harmony that must always be in our country today, I stand before you to present the bill repealing Law 32 July 1999 which created the Fifth Chamber of Guarantee Institutions," said Moncada Luna.
Following widespread protests that led to the appointment of judges for the proposed new chamber, president Ricardo Martinelli pledged on June 20, June to repeal the Fifth Chamber.
On June 26, the Cabinet passed a resolution to revoke the appointment of three judges of the Fifth Chamber, which was made on June 14
