Call for calm as PRD activist gunned down
One PRD activist was killed and another hospitalized when vocal political confrontation was replaced by gunfire in an Miguelito on Thursday, June 21.
An unknown group, killed an aide to deputy Raul Pineda, and injured his sister Annette Pineda who was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds according to the Judicial Investigation Department.
The victims are part of the political team, which on Tuesday confronted deputyMarco Gonzalez, during noisy protests in the National Assembly.
Church and business authorities were quick to speak out after the incident which capped a week of anti government
We will wait until the necessary investigations to apply exemplary sanctions to restore the peace that we need to restore the confidence of society in our authorities who run our country” said Irvin A. Halman President of the Chamber of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture
He joined the call for good sense made by the Archbishop of Panama, José Domingo Ulloa. "We join the voice of the Church and other actors in society who ask that public peace, tolerance and sanity prevail, to avoid violence, which in this case resulted in the loss of life," said Halman
“The forces of the country must demonstrate peacefully, refraining from provoking a confrontation, it compromises the climate of peace and stability that must prevail for the the upcoming electoral period," he concluded in a statement to the media.
