Police and Indians clash at Barro Blanco

Early morning reports on Wednesday, May 23, said that some 60 indigenous protestors clashed with riot police at  Barro Blanco on the Tabasará river, in Chiriqui.

The Indians tried to enter the premises of the Barro Blanco Hydroelectric Project, which they oppose. 

According to police sources, the group of Indians came down the river, very early, to try to stop the trucks removing land as part of the works. The fighting began at about 7:00 am

The Indians have kept vigil in the mountainous area of Bagama, near the hydro project and have asked  the Government to cancel the project and compensate the company Genisa.

A recent Al jazeera report claimed that many high ranking administration members have a invested in the project.
