Striking workers not affecting canal traffic
The continuing strike of 4,000 workers involved in the construction of new locks for the Panama canal will not affect vessels passing through the waterway says the Canal Authority (ACP).
In a statement the ACP said it expects a quick solution to the conflict between workers and the United Group for the Canal (GUPC), a consortium building the third set of locks in the waterway, Workers are calling for fair payment.
The ACP said that it monitors the employment status of the GUPC employees working on the construction of new locks, as well as all other components of the Panama Canal Expansion.
Projects such as dredging and dry excavation, are continuing normally. The work stoppage began Monday January 16, over non-payment of the hours for Sundays and overtime. The company blames the problem on a computer program glitch.
