Conflicting views on new rules governing liquor sales

While Security Minister, Jose Raul Mulino has praised the City's initiative in supporing the so-called "carrot" law for its impact on the fight against violence,  others including the Tourism manger have condemned the move.

The law has introduced earlier closing hours for night spots including discos and taverns,  and placed new restrictions on the serving and sale of alcohol during the early hours in hotels and supermarkets. The new rules will also cover the  granting of permits for taverns.

Tourism manager, Solomon Shamah has defended the sale of liquor in the early morning hours in casinos and supermarkets.

But the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture welcomed the adoption of restrictive rules for the sale of liquor in the capital, and called on other communities in the country to adopt it.

"We congratulate the mayor (Bosco Vallarino) for following the guidlines of the Executive Branch, and we restrictions on the serving and sale of alcohol during the early hours in hotels an supermarkets.

Vallarino had initially opposed the new law, and called for ammendements.
