Mayors urged to implement new disco closing hours
While discotheque and bar owners have predictably opposed a new law regulating opening times, Panama’s provincial governor has called on mayors across the country to implement the law.
Correa Mayín sent a request on Friday to the mayors of the Republic to implement the Executive Decree 1424 of Nov. 9, 2011 which governs regulation of the the operation of night clubs.
The controversial decree , known as the carrot law established a new operation schedule for night clubs:Sunday to Wednesday from 9:00 am . to 2:00 am of the next day, and from Thursday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 am of the next day.
Rafael Zeballos, leader of Young Pro Public Safety Foundation, a local nongovernmental organization, said the decree is "inefficient" since the measure does not fulfill its true purpose of counteracting crime rates and Insecurity in the country.
According To Zeballos, The decree is unfair competition and will cause cause problems between casino and hotels' bars and discotheques owners and owners.
