Police involved in kidnap and murder case says suspect
A second suspect in the kidnap and murder of five university students in Chorrera has claimed that local police were linked to the crime.
Fermin Antonio Tavares who is being sought by police in the Dominican Republic and through Interpol has said that he is willing to surrender so long as the Panamanian judiciary does not intervene, because of the corruption that exists.
Through Telemetro Morning News Tavares asked for the investigation of two members of the National Police (PN) who were linked to a fellow Dominican, Alcibiades Mendez, who has confessed to the crime and remains in detention.
Tavares said that Mendez was approached by two policemen with an offer to participate in a 'business', without explaining that it was actually a kidnapping. According to Tavares he was threatened by Mendez, who said that if he reported him he would be arrested.
Tavares traveled to the Dominican Republic in September to deal with some family business. The suspect asked the Assistant Prosecutor Dimas Guevara, to review the existing kinks and asked him to investigate the amounts paid by relatives of the murdered victims
Gustavo Perez, director of the National Police , denied police involvement in the events, but judicial sources have confirmed the involvement of two policemen and that contamination occurred in the investigations says La Estrella.
The Deputy Minister of Public Security, Alejandro Garuz, described the statements of Tavares as 'amazing' and ordered the Attorney General to expand the investigations.
The five students of Asian descent were kidnapped and were murdered after recording of their voices were sent to their families along with ransom demands. They were buried under the floor of a house occupied by the prime suspect.One of the students was allegedly buried alive
