Constitutional committee rejects return of death penalty
The special commission of notable citizens studying changes in the constitution has refused to include the return of the death penalty.

The proposal was submitted August 3 by CD lawmaker and first deputy chairman of the National Assembly, Marcos Gonzalez.

Former judge Esmeralda Arosemena de Troitiño,  coordinator and spokesperson for the group said Article 30 of the Constitution explicitly prohibits the death penalty in Panama.

Article 30 of the Constitution states: "There is no death penalty, expatriation or confiscation of property."
The appointment of constitutionalist Heriberto Araúz as the new coordinator and spokesman of the special commission has been ratified.
