Fewer guns fewer, killings in Panama
The fall in the number of killings in Panama this year, is attributed to the removal of a large amount of guns from the streets says The Prosecutor's Office.
A "food for Guns" program initiated by the Governor's Office. netted over 500 weapons in the first three drives. Those handing in guns, with no questions asked, received food vouchers.
Prosecutor Dimas Guevara said that from January to May 2010, there were 373 murders throughout the country. This year the number fell to 278 for the same period. {jathumbnail off}
In Panama City, there were 111 homicides this year, down from 241 in the same period in 2010.
