The Panamanian consul whose picture in drag circled the world last week, has tendered his resignation to Vice President and foreign Minister  Juan Carlos Varela.

Ítalo Giovanni Afú, (left) in party costumeÍtalo Giovanni Afú, submitted his resignation  as Consul to Spain’s Canary Islands on Monday, March  29. He was photographed in drag during a carnival, and some reports said he had been seen holding hands with another person in women’s clothes. After a report and photos appeared in Panama some  officials and political allies rushed to defend him, saying that what he did in his spare time was his concern. Others pointed out that as a representative of Panama he was on duty 24/7. {jathumbnail off}

He  said he was sorry for having dressed as a woman during the regional Carnival festival "I regret it very much … I made a mistake," he said.

“It was not my intention for this to become a scandal," he said on  the Telemetro Reporta news program, and he apologized to the national government, citizens, and his family.
