A call for help from Japan to Panama

The immensity of the ongoing disaster in Japan continues to reach us daily through the news media, and the country now needs the help of those  it has reached out to in the past.

Newsroom, has received a message which is carried in expanded form below, and we encourage readers to provide what support they can individually, or through social groups to which they belong, by making a donation through a Banco General account.

We all have watched with horror the extent of the natural and man made disaster which has befallen Japan a country that has long  had a close and supportive relationship with Panama.

While we have admired the almost stoical strength of the people hit by the most massive earthquake in their recorded history, followed by the devastating tsunami and finally the nuclear disaster that has threatened lives and the food chain, and added hundreds of thousands more to the already huge list of those living in emergency shelters,

 A country usually so very strong and helpful to Panama suddenly finds herself in a position needing international help to cope with human suffering and need for which no one could have been prepared. 
 A wave of international help is being organized right now to help those who have lost family, loves ones and their homes, who survive in cramped emergency shelters in the middle of a cold winter without basic amenities and scores of thousands of them without the loved ones they have shared their lives with.
 Japan has helped in the past as well as is helping right now in many different projects here in Panama helping make life here more pleasant, sanitary and comfortable.

It is, therefore, only right to give an opportunity to those of us here to make our own contributions to the Japanese people who need our help right now. 
 The Japanese Embassy in Panama has opened an account into which individual contributions can be paid. The money will then be transferred to one of the Japanese Relief Agencies in order to supply food, water, shelter and clothes to the people most affected by the disaster.
