Centennial Bridge access ready by September
Work on the revamping of the access road to the Centennial Bridge which collapsed in December 2010 will be completed in August or September.
The Ministry of Public Works says that work has finished on 84 of 140 pylons that will support the new access road. The repair work has reduced the traffic flow across the bridge to one direction at limited times, which has led to long delays at the Bridge of the Americas.
Public Works Minister Federico José Suárez says 12 "control wells" have been installed to monitor water levels around the bridge, and to to detect any shifts in soil leading to renewed problems. Poor drainage has been identified as the reason for the road’s collapse.
