Fines for wasting water, and service cuts ahead
While Panama endured its heaviest rainfall on record in 2010, with more forecast for the “dry season” the water authority (IDAAN) is threatening fines for wasting water.
Director Manuel González Ruiz has asked users to conserve water, and people found wasting it will be fined between $50 and $5,000.
But, applying the fines will not be easy. It will require photographs and maybe a snitch line.
Many parts of Panama City have been left without water following contamination from flooding in the Chilibre water treatment plant, which supplies most of the city's water.
Idaan has said that users should not use water for non-essential uses, such as filling swimming pools.
Violators will be reported to the public services authority ASEP, which has the final responsibility for issuing fines.
MORE INTERRUPTIONS COMING
Meanwhile the authority reporting that water service will be interrupted Tuesday, December 28 to several sectors in Panama City while servicing takes place at the Centennial treatment plant.
There will be no service from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Felipillo, Caminos de Omar, Nueva Esperanza, San Juan, Tataré, Pacora and Pacora Centro, San Diego, Tanara and Paso Blanco. {jathumbnail off}
