Alert: Panama recalls 20 weight loss products
Panama’s Ministry of Health (MOH) has acted on international alerts about the drug sibutramine, used in the manufacture of at least 20 weight-loss products sold in the country.
It may cause heart problems and strokes in those ingesting it.
Eric Conte, director of Pharmacy and Drugs, for the Ministry confirmed that the MOH has ordered the withdrawal of slimming products containing the substance following by international warnings issued by the Medicines AgencyUnited States, the European Medicines Agency and the Spanish Agency of Medicines.
Studies conducted by the agencies showed that the risk control for the health of people consuming these products was greater than the weight they would lose.
One study found that 16% of patients who ingested the substance drugs had cardiovascular problems and even fatal heart attacks.
Conte said that this a formal resolutionwill be published in the Official Gazette, ordering the recallof all products containing this substance.
