Carnage that could bring down the house
By David Young
How does she do it? Anyone who has met Kimberly Hall , a petite, perpetual motion dynamo has to ask the question.
She moves seamlessly from one social or community activity to another, sometimes balancing two or more ventures at the same time and, in a few short years in Panama, has become a benefactor to all seeking fulfillment from the local cultural and entertainment scene.
Right now she is working on God of Carnage as both Producer and Director and it will be staged at the Ancon Theatre Guild in October. It was the winner last year of the Tony Award for the best play and the Lawrence Olivier Award. Written by French playwright Yasmina Yeta. Originally titled Le Dieu du Carnage , it is the story of an evening meeting of two pairs of parents who get together in a “civilized” manner to resolve a playground dispute between their two 11 years olds, one of whom is hurt.
As the evening wears on civility disappears out of the window, acrimony sets in, and it is the parents who demonstrate the childishness still hidden away in so many adults and the meeting dissolves into chaos.
But if you think you’re in for some gray Freudian soul searching or Ingmar Bergen cold northern drama, rest easy.
This is an uproarious comedy. On the first night in the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End, the quartet of actors had to carry on with emergency lighting during a power cut,but that glitch didn’t stop the rave reviews. Even some hardened critics said they laughed all the way through.
Kimberly has already established her reputations as director of Writer’s Block and Strangely Familiar, but she is especially excited about this play, and feels that she is working with a quartet of truly professional actors with Kari King, Lili Mendoza, Matthew Addis and Frank Schaffarczyk.
So we can look forward to an evening to match the many others that the Theatre Guild has given us over the years.
And for those readers who like to harass me about my typos, it really is the THEATRE Guild, with the English spelling
The show will be on October 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, & 16
