Panama fishermen retain sangfroid in face of tsunami warning
Saturday’s early morning tsunami alert following the massive earthquake in Chile created what seemed like panic in some quarters but was treated with a shrug of the shoulders by Panamanina fishermen.
One local blogger sent out an early morning message giving a precise time, 9.57 a,m. for a tsunami to reach the City. It was transmitted onwards by an ex-pats group.
When 10 a.m. arrived, and no tsunami, there was an update with promises of more information, which didn’t materialize. leaving some people wondering.
SINAPROC, the national civil protection agency lifted the alert “after careful monitoring of the coast revealed no abnormality.” and ruled out out the danger.
But there was a cautionary note for fishermen. SINAPROC recommended that artisan fishermen suspend activities over the next few days, as a precautionary measure, and that residents of Pacific coastal communities across the country maintain vigilance in case o heavy swells.
