Prince Andrew inaugurates new British Residency
Prince Andrew, The Duke of York flew into Panama on Sunday evening to attend trade meetings and to inaugurate the new British Residency.
On Monday in his role as an envoy for the development of commerce and investment , he met with President Ricardo Martinelli, Vice-President Vice-President Juan Carlos Varela, Commerce and Industry Minister Roberto Henriques and Alberto Vallarino Minister of Economy and Finance.
On his arrival he traveled immediately to San Francisco to inaugurate the new British Residency, "Mallet Lodge" home of UK Ambassador Richard Austen . Prince Andrew he made a gave a brief light hearted speech before unveiling a commemorative plaque and mingling with the guests including Candian Ambassador Patricia. Langan-Torell, a small group of British residents and local politicians.
Prince Andrew, who attended high school in Canada, served in the Royal Navy as a helicopter pilot including the Falklands War.
The old residence on Avenida Balboa, a couple of blocks from the former US Embassy, will be returned to Panama, and will hopefully avoid the fate of the US structure, scheduled for demolition and to be replaced by an office tower housing government departments and businesses.
The overcrowded nearby Sick Children’s Hospital is believed to be interested in utilizing the building
