President promises crack down on corruption, more hospitals and new bus system
President Ricardo Martinelli has pledged to crack down “fat monkeys”, politicians and public servants who engage in acts of corruption.
In his January 1 address at the opening of the National Assembly he said: "Every official who accepts a bribe commits a crime against the people, and they will be punished."
It was a reiteration of a campaign theme attacking those who went into office with empty pockets and came out rich.
He pledged to govern on behalf of the people, and not for those interested in promoting their own interests.
A five-year plan, will include lowering prices for basic foods and the building eight hospitals and a number of clinics to improve the quality of health care.
He also promised that the government would provide school uniforms and supplies to 800,000 students when the academic years begins in March and the Metro Bus transit system will be started in the last quarter of the year
