Ex-president under investigation remains in Europe
La Prensa, which has led the charge into uncovering allegations of corruption against former president Ernesto Pérez Balladares, reports that he has spent several weeks in Europe and there is no sign of his imminent return.
Balladares ( El Toro, The Bull) is facing an investigation into allegations of corruption and money laundering that date to his term in office.
The allegations involve a company, Lucky Games, that received a lucrative gambling license during his administration. That company allegedly made payments to a shell company controlled by relatives and friends of the former president says La Prensa.
The case has been assigned to a special prosecutor from the organized crimes unit of the Public Ministry.
The last public appearance made by the ex-president was on Oct. 5, when he announced that he had no connection to Lucky Games. Soon after, he left on his trip which included stops in multiple European countries.
