ENVIRONMENT: Extinction of polar bears looming

Climate change could mean before the near extinction of polar bears, unable to feed when ice sheets disappear in the ocean, according to a study published Monday in Nature  magazine

If greenhouse gas emissions continue at the same rate as today, “the decline in reproduction and

survival will jeopardize the persistence of almost all subpopulations by 2100,” according to the

researchers, who stress that even in the most favorable scenario, the extinction of these plantigrades would only be postponed. Climate change and global warming have faded from the public conscience since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic but the effects are being seen around the world and the highest temperatures ever seen in the Arctic circle have been recorded in Siberia.
