OPINION: Drug traffickers and narco politics

Electoral politics is addicted to money. Money finances clientelistic practices; clientelism generates votes; the votes secure charges, and the charges facilitate business.

There is an industry that not only has the resources to provide this money but also has plenty of reasons to do so. It is about drug trafficking, an activity whose criminal nature requires the protection and influence that a politician or unscrupulous official can offer. In recent weeks, La Prensa has reported isolated cases that suggest the existence of political-drug-trafficking dumbbells in our country. The possibility that the drug money is infiltrating campaigns is real, and so it is minor campaigns, is cause for alarm, because the experiences of other countries show that you start supporting small candidacies and you end up buying high positions.

Living oblivious to this reality makes us easy prey of this scourge that, once rooted, is very difficult to fight. The fight against drug trafficking and narco-politics requires not only well-educated and well-trained officials but also informed and attentive voters who will close the door on the first sign- LA PRENSA, Mar.29
