General Strike called for July
The National Council of Organized Workers (Conato), the organization that brings together most of the country’s unions, called on Thursday for a general strike to begin in July.
The announcement came from at the headquarters of Conato, in Balboa, where following a meeting where union leaders decided to support all measures of pressure for rejection of the omnibus law (known as Law 9 in 1. It got its name after the Assembly passed it in three readings. With at least one section having been passed by a committee only hours after it was received from a minister. Representatives of Unions, citizens goups and employers claimed that they were given only five minutes to present their objections, and that three constitional codechanges and six laws were rushed through in three hours.
Miguel Angel Edwards, coordinator of Conato, said told that the union decided to make a "alliance monolithic alliance ", ie that will support all actions of various trade associations and civil society groups to come out in opposition of the Act recently signed by the President of the Republic, Ricardo Martinelli.
