Deadbeat employers skip social security payments for maids

Five years after Panama’s government introduced reforms making it a right for domestic workers to have  their social security paid, the vast majority of employers have not stepped up to the plate.

Of the estimated 70,000 domestic workers in the country only 5,000 are covered.

To remedy the problem, Social Security will stage an event on Nov. 21 at Atlapa Convention Center to help domestic employees understand their rights.
Government inspectors will be on hand available to help employees ensure tht deadbeat employers are following the law.
