Another voice urges patience to retirees
Panama’s jubilados (retirees), promised a pension increase during the 2008 election campaign, are once again being urged to be patient.
The call has come previously from the President, Ricardo Martinelli, the Minister of Health,Franklin Vergara, and the head of social security.
Retirees have been taking to the streets to protest the delay and now another call for patience comes from Minister of the Presidency, Jimmy Papadimitriu.
The minister said the president is trying to find where to find the money to boost pensions.
Speaking on radio, Papadimitriu people had be aware that the increase should not have a negative impact on the economy.
He said that among the alternatives for finding the money are funds previously assigned to the Central American Parliament that Panama has now left, or a tax on the production on beer and liquor.
The increase to "will not happen overnight “ said Papadimitriu . … "It's not easy.”
