Tourism chief wants 33% more for Carnival budget

Only a couple of weeks after Panama’s tourism chief Salomon Shamah, said $1.5 million was adequate for the upcoming carnival he has asked for a 33% budget increase.

The cabinet voted to grant the original budget on Feburary 1. Then, after $800,000 in no bid payments were made, an additional $500,000 was called for. The decision rests with cabinet.

The tourism authority's 2011 budget totals $48.4 million.

Shamah says the additional funds are needed to pay for performers and floats for the parade the Cinta Costera.

Meanwhile tenants of high end condominium buildings bordering Avenida Balboa are concerned about security and access to their buildings during the carnival.
