Panama public transport gets another lift
Panama moves a step close to a 21st Century transportation system on Monday, May 23, with the introduction of two new Metro Bus routes.
Aging and polluting diablos rojos will be pushed aside for shiny new buses on the routes El Valle-Corredor Norte and Veranillo-Los Andes-Corredor Norte. {jathumbnail off}}
The announcement came Friday after a delay whikethe transit authority (ATTT) worked to reach an agreement with the bus company that had been providing service on the routes. They will be replaced by 20 Metro buses.
The Metro Bus service started to kick in early this year and will eventually replace most of the "diablos rojos" that now provide the bulk of public transportation while contributing to noise and air pollution and multiple injuries and deaths to passengers and pedestrians. Meanwhile Panama city is facing large scale traffic congestion as work on the new subway system moves along.
