93,500, Panamanian high school students will soon receive a laptop computer, courtesy of the Ministry of Education (Meduca).
Jose Guillermo Herrera, Administrative Vice Minister, Meduca, says that the laptops will be distributed late April or early May. The project involves an investment of $26.7 million, about $250 per computer.
Herrera says the project aims to give students the technology tools to improve their learning opportunities, while allowing them to "optimize" and integrate all knowledge.
"The computers are of international standards, specifically for use by students, but will have all the programs that students need to supplement their academic plans," said the administrator.
Computers are strictly for "academic use," and will have a filtering system with restricted access to some websites. The system will allow Web access not only in schools but in all geographical locations in the country. The security system includes locking the device immediately the loss of a computer is reported.
Herrera added that an 1,100 strong “Information Security Corps” has been formed from students with computer knowledge, who are being trained to improve their skills. This group will have the knowledge to assist students and support them in the proper use of their laptops The group, says Meduca’s National Computer Director Roberto Sevillano on Radio Panama will monitor the condition of the equipment.
Speaking on Radio Panama, Sevillano said that the group has been well received, and that training is being given to young people not only in technology but aspects of value creation.
