Panamas African bees increasing: reports up 21%

Reports of African bees in Panama city have jumped 21 percent since last year and in the capital 20-30 people are treated for stings every day.

The figures are from the Fire Department of Panama (CBP) and  show that from January to April this year there were 2,588 reports of African bees compared with  2,228 in the same period last year.

Major Carlos Cedeño, CBPchief of the regional area of Panama  said: “It is important that citizens do not try to overthrow the combs on their own. They must remain calm and call "

Cedeño recommended as a prevention method not wearing dark clothing because that attracts bees.

Allergy specialist Mark Lopez said people stung by Africa bees should be transferred immediately to a hospital for treatment.

Symptoms that may occur include low  blood pressure, choking and appearance of hives, he said.
