Panama tsunami alert canceled
A Panama Tsunami alert triggered by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake off the coast of El Salvador, has been canceled.
Arturo Alvarado director general of the civil protection agency Sinaproc said on Monday, August 27 that the alert was announced by the US following the strong earthquake registering 7.4 on the Richter scale in the Pacific Ocean about 78 miles (125 kilometers) off the El Salvador coasf
Alvarado said that Sinaproc’s primary obligation is to analyze the facts before alarming the population, and Sinaproc staff were close to Punta Burica, which was the number one likely location for the tsunami to hit “but nothing happened."
Alvarado said on TVN News that since last year and the Japanese earthquake disaster triggering a tsunami warning in Panama, the country has an early warning plan in place to enable exposed municipalities to take action.
