Theres no such thing as a free bus
IF YOU WERE looking forward to a free ride on a luxury air conditioned bus traveling the streets of Panama don’t hold your breath.
Mayor Roxana Mendez has decided that the free bus, like the free lunch, is a no go. On Friday, April 26, she announced that the $250,000 contract to provide 50 buses, to provide afree shuttle service for a period of 10 days was dead.
The hiring was intended as a temporary alternative to relieve public transport chaos, after the departure of the "Diablos Rojos" and the coming into operation of the Metro Bus
In a press release she said "It was appropriate that we provide this temporary relief."
The statement explains that although the Mayor responded to comments made by the Comptroller General of the Republic today, the company Interbus, S. A. that would be responsible for providing the buses, reported "that because this process has been extended, it no longer has the capacity to provide the service of 50 buses for the month of May."
The proposal submitted by the mayor had been approved April 5 by both the City Council and the Ministry of Economy and Finance. But the initiative had to be countersigned by the Comptroller, which didn’t happen even though a city spokesman had prophesied approval would be given in less than 8 hours.
