Victims of bus fire remembered but not compensated
A VIGIL to remember the victims of a La Cresta bus fire that killed 18 passengers and injured 25 was held Wednesday, October 23, at the site of the tragedy
The ceremony has been held annually by relatives to remember and mourn their loved ones, who died in the flames seven years ago,
But justice has still not been served says La Prensa,
David Ramirez, of the October 23 Movement whose son died in the fire, said the families of some victims are still waiting for compensation, even as the government has paid compensation to the owners of "diablos rojos."
He said that that although transportation in the city has been improved, there is still a lack of work on the reduction of accidents and bad driving by the operators of Metro buses needs to be addressed.
Minister of the Presidency Roberto Henríquez said that the transport system continues to improve and that the goal is to make sure another tragedy of that magnitude does not take place again.
"We are still building, we have not finished," he said.
On Wednesday, October 24 Avenida Martin Sosa will be closed so blue hearts can be painted on the roadway to remember the victims.
Metro operator Mi Bus has announced detours around the site and officials from transit agency ATTT will be on hand to divert traffic.
