Martinelli avoids Colon riot compensation issue
BUSINESSES in Colon who suffered heavy losses from vandalism triggered by the government’s plan to sell the assets of the Colon Free Zone are still waiting for promised compensation
The riots left three people dead from police bullets and 40 injured.
Anacleto Ceballos, former president of the Colon Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture and Industries said he repeatedly expressed the concerns of the business community traders to President Martinelli, but there was no firm response from the president.
The current president of the business association, José de la Rosa Lam, said he will continue to push for payments to affected traders.
Entrepreneurs in the province of Colon estimate that the losses suffered during the riots of October 2012, amounting to about 100 million.
Martinelli had also promised to personally intervene in the dispute over Venezuelan payments owed to Free Zone traders, who now believe it was another unfulfilled promise.
